The Matthews family is lively and bustling with a mom, dad, a toddler, three enormous Alaskan Malamutes, a cat, and eight fish.
Their home is far from quiet. Two years ago, the couple welcomed their baby girl and made it a point to introduce her to their animal pack immediately, fostering a bond right from the start to ensure harmony among all members.
When the family’s sister acquired a new Golden Retriever puppy, they decided to host him for a few days. This way, the Malamutes could get used to him and not see him as a threat during visits. The retriever, named Buddy, was brought into the household, and the strategy worked perfectly with the dogs. The Malamutes accepted Buddy as part of their group without any issues.
However, the family’s cat, Milo, presented a different challenge. Milo, also known as “Milomute” on his Instagram account, is described as a “Mainecoon cross who thinks he’s a malamute.” When it was time for Buddy to meet Milo, the family captured the moment on camera and shared it on YouTube. The video shows Milo’s initial displeasure at the new canine arrival.
At first, Milo kept his distance from Buddy, reluctant to let his owner bring him closer to the new “guest.” He sat warily, feeling threatened and angry, waiting for the puppy to make a move. Buddy, however, remained asleep, allowing Milo to cautiously approach and sniff him. Milo immediately noticed that Buddy didn’t smell like a Malamute, which was unfamiliar to him, and he decided it was best to stay away.
Over the next day, Milo continued to encounter Buddy around the house, interpreting his parents’ attempts to bring them closer as unnecessary. “Just keep him away from me, alright?” seemed to be Milo’s unspoken sentiment. Gradually, as Buddy remained mostly asleep, Milo’s curiosity grew. He began to approach Buddy more frequently, sniffing him and sitting closer on the couch, though he still wasn’t ready to accept him fully.

A horrific case of animal cruelty and domestic violence unfolded last year in Fargo, North Dakota. The details are disturbing and tragic. The abuser was sentenced to prison, but we must ensure he never terrorizes another person or animal again.
With more time, Milo started to realize that Buddy was going to be a regular presence in their home. About two weeks later, Milo showed signs of acceptance. The two could be seen lying together on the couch, hinting at the beginning of a sweet friendship.
