Larry the cat has called 10 Downing Street his home since 2011. Adopted from a rescue shelter during David Cameron’s tenure as Prime Minister, Larry was bestowed with the title of Chief Mouser to tackle the mouse problem at the Prime Minister’s residence.
Larry, recommended by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for his exceptional mouse-catching skills, joined the household without feeling the need to prove his prowess to anyone. Dubbed “Lazy Larry,” there were even thoughts of replacing him. However, his charm won over everyone, including the Prime Minister, ensuring his stay.
Larry’s tenure outlasted multiple Prime Ministers, transitioning from a stray to a cherished resident. His journey from a shelter to becoming a social media sensation with over 814K Twitter followers is nothing short of remarkable. His followers eagerly await his every tweet.
But what exactly does Larry do at 10 Downing Street? Has he ever caught a mouse? Indeed, he has. In his initial months, Larry caught numerous mice. The following year, another cat joined him, and together they managed the mouse problem.
Larry roams the grounds, greets guests, and assists the security team in safeguarding the Prime Minister’s residence. Occasionally, he allows a select few to pet him.
However, Larry has a notable weakness: he dislikes the rain. The main entrance lacks a cat door, meaning Larry must wait for someone to let him in. On a particular rainy day, a police officer on duty noticed Larry waiting outside. With no guests arriving soon and Larry getting wet, the officer took action.
The officer knocked on the door, and it was promptly opened, allowing Larry to stride in, dry and safe.

A horrific case of animal cruelty and domestic violence unfolded last year in Fargo, North Dakota. The details are disturbing and tragic. The abuser was sentenced to prison, but we must ensure he never terrorizes another person or animal again.
At 15 years old, Larry is now considered a senior cat. Although still in good health, his mouse-catching days are mostly behind him. He now enjoys lounging on furniture and posing for photos.
Despite his reduced duties, Larry has a unique advantage over the Prime Ministers he’s lived with: 10 Downing Street remains his permanent home, while the Prime Ministers come and go.
