Some cats tend to shy away from children, but Binx, a neighborhood cat, isn’t one of them. Instead, he adores the kids around him, and among them, a special bond blossomed between him and a young girl named Lainey.
Lainey and her family met Binx during the early days of the pandemic when they began taking daily walks to get some fresh air. With lockdowns in place, Lainey couldn’t see her friends, but she found a new companion in Binx. “Back in March 2020, we started taking daily walks around our neighborhood, and that’s when we first met Binx. He quickly took a liking to our daughter and started greeting her whenever he saw her coming,” Lainey’s mom, who shares her story as thecolorfulmother on TikTok, explained.
At first, Lainey would simply approach Binx, and he welcomed her attention without hesitation. While many cats are cautious around children, often due to their unpredictable movements, Binx seemed to trust Lainey completely. Over time, their bond grew so strong that Binx would eagerly run to greet her before she even reached him. “He became a sweet friend to her during such lonely times when there were no other kids to play with,” Lainey’s mom shared.
Their friendship continued even after the restrictions eased, and their daily meetups became a cherished routine. “The love has lasted through the years. He even comes to visit us at our house,” said Lainey’s mom.
Binx’s fondness for Lainey could be explained by a study from Oregon State University, which suggests that most cats view humans as a source of comfort. Whether it was comfort or simply that he thought Lainey was special, their connection was undeniable.
For several years, the two spent a lot of time together, but like all good things, their daily encounters were about to end. One day, during one of their walks, Lainey and her mom noticed a “For Sale” sign in front of Binx’s house, signaling that their dear feline friend would soon be moving away. Lainey had to face the reality of saying goodbye to Binx.
“We’re sad but so grateful for the happiness he brought her during a time when it was really needed,” Lainey’s mom said. She captured their final goodbye on video, a moment filled with emotion, and shared it on TikTok. It didn’t take long for the heartfelt video to move viewers to tears.
“I sobbed at the end – our sweet neighborhood pets definitely hold a place in our hearts,” one TikTok user commented. Another added, “He wanted your little daughter to remember that, contrary to what many believe, black cats are wonderful! Maybe one day she’ll remember and get one.”
A neighbor also chimed in, “Thank you so much for sharing this. Binx had a truly special bond with the kids in our neighborhood. It was just so beautiful.”
