This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350 was initially requested in December of 1965 by Larsen Ford located in White Plains, New York. The invoice date for this request was January 13, 1966. Chassis number 6S613 is believed to have been first registered in the state of New Jersey. In 1980, it was purchased by an owner in Nebraska. This owner mentioned discovering signs that a supercharger had been installed at some point. In the early 2000s, a following owner added a Paxton supercharger. Subsequently, the current possessor of the vehicle acquired it.
This individual initiated a restoration project that encompassed a repaint in the original red hue and a comprehensive refurbishment of the 289ci HiPo V8 engine. The car also boasts additional features such as a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, 14” 10-spoke alloy wheels, Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes, Koni shock absorbers, black vinyl interior upholstery, a fold-down rear seat, and an AM radio. At present, this GT350 is available for purchase through a dealership arrangement. The sale includes duplicates of the original factory invoices, photographs and documents from the restoration process, and an unblemished title from the state of Missouri.
As part of the restoration process, the car was expertly refinished in its original Candy Apple Red color. This involved carefully placing the body on a rotisserie to carry out necessary metal repairs. The dealership selling the car points out that there is a noticeable difference in shade between the paint on the hood and that on the other panels. Notable features of the car include distinctive white Le Mans stripes, a hood made from a combination of steel and fiberglass, complete with a scoop and securing pins. The car also boasts fixed plexiglass windows on the rear quarter panels, as well as fiberglass scoops on these panels designed to cool the brakes. Other features include a bullet-style mirror on the driver’s side and an antenna that’s mounted on the fender.
The 1966 GT350 had the option for ten-spoke alloy wheels, which this car features. These wheels are enveloped by 6.95-14 Goodyear Blue Streak white-letter tires. Additionally, a spare tire that matches the others is securely stored in the trunk. As part of its standard configuration, the GT350 came equipped with Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes. Moreover, these models were equipped with larger rear drum brakes compared to the ones found on standard Mustang models from the same era.
Inside the car, the cabin is adorned with black knit vinyl covering the front bucket seats. Additionally, there is an optional fold-down rear seat that continues the same black knit vinyl theme. The interior is further enhanced by color-coordinated door panels and carpeting. Safety-wise, the cabin is equipped with latch-and-link lap belts. Distinctive GT350-branded rubber floor mats are also part of the interior features. Entertainment is provided by a pushbutton AM radio.
Positioned at the forefront of the interior is a steering wheel adorned with a wooden rim. It stands just before a 140-mph speedometer, which is accompanied by gauges that monitor fuel level, oil pressure, amperage, and coolant temperature. The odometer, displaying five digits, reads 70,000 miles. Among these, around 1,000 miles have been driven during the current ownership. Additionally, a tachometer capable of reading up to 9,000 rpm is situated at the top of the dashboard.
Powering the vehicle is the K-code 289ci HiPo V8 engine, which comes equipped with a Paxton supercharger. This supercharger was installed during a previous ownership and functions by directing air through a Cobra-branded intake plenum and a four-barrel carburetor. The engine received a comprehensive overhaul by Kinetic Racing Engines, located in Westland, Michigan, back in 2009. This overhaul involved various tasks such as machining the block, cylinder heads, and connecting rods. The crankshaft was carefully examined using magnafluxing techniques, and components like the pistons, main and rod bearings, camshaft, valves, timing chain, oil pump, and water pump were replaced. Additionally, the previous owner introduced a Griffin aluminum radiator and an upgraded cooling fan to the setup.
Sending power to the rear wheels is a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, a modification that was carried out during a previous ownership. The suspension system of the GT350 is notable for its inclusion of Koni shock absorbers on all corners. Furthermore, the setup features override rear traction bars and a front sway bar that is larger than the one found on the standard Mustang model.
