The RML Short Wheelbase V-12 Is a Splendid New-Old Classic Ferrari GT

RML Group, a British high-performance automotive engineering company specializing in development projects for motorsports and OEMs, has designed its first car. With other noteworthy builds in its portfolio, including the only street-legal Aston Martin Vulcan and brand-new classic DB5 continuation cars, it was not a matter of if but when RML would launch a bespoke model of its own.

Taking inspiration from the beautifully designed Ferrari 250 GT SWB, the RML Short Wheelbase will come powered by a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-12. Sourced from a Ferrari 550 Maranello and rated at 478 hp and 419 lb-ft of torque, the V-12 powers the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. RML claims the Short Wheelbase V-12 can reach 60 mph from a rest in 4.1 seconds, and the top speed is estimated to be over 185 mph.

Given the RML SWB V-12 has a shorter wheelbase—as the model name suggests—and a more compact body than the 550 Maranello on which it is based, some significant chassis surgery was needed. The British motorsports house also needed to make several modifications to fit the 550’s potent engine under the hood. Integrating the powertrain required bespoke parts designed by RML from scratch, including the air inlet and the cooling, oil, and exhaust systems.

Additional updates to the V-12 powerplant involved redesigning five radiators for the transmission and PAS coolers and HVAC condenser. Because the radiators and cooling system determine the position of most components in the engine bay, the design and layout of the radiators and cooling system were a top priority.

To create a more cohesive look when you pop the hood open, RML relocated the oil tank for the dry-sump system to the side of the engine. The washer reservoir and oil tank, among other components, are positioned symmetrically and have carbon fiber covers. Furthermore, RML also developed an all-new exhaust system from the manifold to the quad tailpipes. Abiding by all noise regulations without hindering original engine performance, the RML discharges acoustically delicious notes.

Majestically sporting Ferrari 250 GT style and armed with 550 Maranello chops, the RML Short Wheelbase V-12 will debut in final form later this year. RML expects to export approximately 70 of the custom-built cars, and thanks to the use of OEM parts, the new classic grand tourer can be serviced by any reputable Ferrari specialist.

And if need be, RML offers its own “Flying Spanner” exclusive service. Technicians will travel to where the vehicle is situated to perform the necessary maintenance. Now that is what we call a higher standard of service.
