Woman Sees Bed Moving Around On Its Own, So She Draws Up A Sign

Cats are clever and adorable. They never fail to steal a piece of our hearts. This story is a prime example. After being surrendered to the Cat Care Society due to “house soiling issues,” Theodore, a timid feline, immediately caught the attention of the shelter staff. From the moment he arrived, it was clear to his new caregivers that this gentle cat was painfully shy. He seemed withdrawn and bewildered by his sudden change of environment, sitting quietly in his kennel, unsure of why he had ended up there.

“His paperwork mentioned that his biggest fear is leaving any space he feels comfortable in,” shared Ariana Jenks, the marketing manager at Cat Care Society, with The Dodo.

Once Theodore had completed his medical check-up, he was introduced to the shelter’s free-roam space where the other cats were. Surrounded by new sights and sounds, Theodore quickly became overwhelmed. Looking for a safe space, he discovered comfort under a large bed in the room.

The next morning, Michelle, the animal care supervisor, noticed something unusual. As she went about her daily cleaning routine, she realized the bed was not where she had left it. Curious, she soon discovered why: Theodore had been moving the bed around with him, using it as a protective shell while he cautiously explored his new surroundings. “It was like watching a turtle carry its home with it,” Jenks explained.

The staff quickly grew fond of Theodore’s clever way of seeking security, but they also worried that his hiding spot might be overlooked by potential adopters. Wanting to make sure people knew where Theodore was, they put up a sign to alert visitors. “One of the other cats, a little orange guy named Teddy, would often lie on top of the bed,” Jenks said, “and we think he knew Theo was underneath. We didn’t want anyone to accidentally sit on him or miss out on meeting him.”

Although Theodore had only been at the shelter for a short time, the team was already hard at work helping him gain confidence. For now, his bed gave him a sense of safety, and that’s what mattered most. Jenks believes the best home for Theodore would be with someone who can offer him the love and patience he needs to adjust, especially in a quieter environment without children, as his previous home had likely caused him a great deal of stress.

“Theodore’s former owners did mention that, once he’s comfortable, he’s talkative, friendly, and affectionate,” Jenks added. “But he does take some time to warm up to new people.”

This incident sets a dangerous precedent for what is acceptable in our educational institutions.

The staff at the shelter is certain that Theodore’s perfect family is out there. Until they arrive, Theodore will be waiting patiently, safe under his giant bed, ready to start the next chapter of his life. If you’d like more information on Theodore and fill out an application, click here.
