Pontiac really understood how to bring performance and luxury in equal measures. The best way to see it is on this 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix. It’s rare color and curvy bodylines are balanced with a bucket seat interior and a large 389 V8.
The color that’s instantly grabbing your attention is called Iris Mist, and it’s this coupe’s factory-correct color. So it is not only going to draw crowds in, but also you’ve got a cool story to tell them. But more than just how others view this Pontiac, you want it because it’s a ’65. That’s when the styling was changed to the Coke bottle curves that we all loved in this era. Also the hardtop roof ended in a mini flying buttress, which is just another reminder of how style truly ruled the ’60s. And speaking of style, this one has all the right premium touches worthy of a top luxury cruiser. You see it in the front with the extra wide chrome bumper and stacked headlights each in their own chrome pod. In the rear, the taillight panel is hidden within the stylized sweeping trim that’s right above the nicely integrated rear bumper. The factory-correct plum interior is a great complementing color to the exterior, especially when everything is presented so nice and correct as it is here. The doors, dash, upholstery, and headliner all share this color for a great uniform appearance. Pontiac made sure these earned the “grand” part of their name with bucket seats up front with a comfortable center console in-between. The rear passengers were not neglected either with a fold-down armrest to provide individual comfort. The paneling on the console, dash, and factory two-spoke wheel are all terrific pieces that still convey a message of premium luxury today. This nicely presented lumber appearance frames all the gauges and features, including the extra-wide speedometer, heat/defrost controls, and the factory AM/FM stereo. And we know how much you’ll enjoy grabbing the floor mounted shifter and watching the center-mounted vacuumed gauge dance as you cruise down the highway.
The engine bay stays faithful to this car’s original image right down to the black air cleaner and turquoise paint on the block. Fans of the GTO know the Pontiac 389 cubic-inch V8, and it’s a great powerplant to have here, too. There’s a bit more grand touring weight in the Grand Prix compared to the Goats, but that isn’t a problem for this big power, four-barrel carb motor. Advertised at 325 horsepower, it was able to deliver on the Pontiac’s performance promise. Then you add in great features like the three-speed automatic transmission, power brakes, power steering, and a supple ride. It’s this fast moving and luxury cruising attitude that makes the coupe so desirable.
