Cats are often beloved companions, known for their affectionate snuggles and playful antics. However, as much as we adore them, there are moments when a little personal space is needed. For Kristian Svenson, this rings especially true, particularly when his cat, Mulder, decides it’s time to play before sunrise. Mulder, who Kristian describes as “mischievous,” seems to have a knack for getting into everything, even when his owner would prefer he didn’t.
One day, while Kristian was busy making chicken wraps in the kitchen, Mulder repeatedly jumped onto the counter, clearly interested in whatever was going on. Kristian, needing some uninterrupted time to cook, decided to keep Mulder out of the kitchen by placing him in the bathroom and closing the door. But Mulder, not one to be easily deterred, had learned a clever trick—he could open doors by himself. Even after Kristian closed the bathroom door, Mulder would quickly find his way back out.
Kristian shared his experience in the comments of a YouTube video, explaining how it all started: “The first clip is from January. Mulder was 5 months old. I was wrapping chicken and I needed him to stop jumping on the counter for a couple minutes, so I tossed him into the bathroom and closed the door. Seconds later, he was out. I grabbed my camera, started rolling, and tossed him back in. This was something he had never done previously.”
Faced with this new challenge, Kristian decided it was time to outsmart his crafty kitten. He realized that a standard doorknob was no match for Mulder’s agility, so he came up with a plan that he hoped would keep Mulder at bay. Knowing that most cats aren’t fans of water, Kristian placed a large tub of water right beneath the doorknob. The idea was simple: if Mulder tried to jump up and grab the doorknob, he would risk falling into the water, something he would surely avoid.
But Mulder wasn’t so easily discouraged. Proving to be even more nimble than Kristian had anticipated, Mulder managed to approach the doorknob from a different angle, carefully balancing himself. With impressive precision, Mulder lowered the doorknob just enough to pop the door open, then skillfully landed back on the floor, never once touching the water. In no time, he was back in the kitchen, curious to see what Kristian was up to.
