Introduction

When it comes to iconic American muscle cars, few can compare to the Ford Mustang. First introduced in 1964, this classic vehicle has captured the hearts and imaginations of car enthusiasts for decades. And while the original Mustang was certainly impressive, there’s something truly special about a Mustang that has been restored and modified to perfection.

That’s where the 1965 Ford Mustang Resto Mod, SN65 comes in. This custom Pro Touring build is a masterpiece completed by Bob and Wayne Julian of St. Charles, IL in 2006. Featuring a 4.6/640 HP V-8 engine, Whipple twin-screw supercharger, and more, this Mustang is a true engineering marvel that has won multiple awards. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the incredible 1965 Ford Mustang Resto Mod, SN65.

The Build Process

Bob and Wayne Julian spent countless hours working on the 1965 Ford Mustang Resto Mod, SN65, and their efforts certainly paid off. The Mustang’s body was mated to a 2003 SVT Cobra chassis, drivetrain, and interior, which gave it a sleek, modern look while still retaining the classic Mustang feel. The chassis was extended 7 inches, which allowed for a more spacious interior and improved handling.

But what really sets the SN65 apart from other Mustangs is its carbon fiber body panels. The front valance, hood, and flares are all made from this lightweight, durable material, which not only looks great but also improves the car’s performance. The SN65 was also engineered to perfection, as evidenced by its Outstanding Engineering award at the Detroit ISCA in 2006.

Award-Winning Performance

The SN65’s engineering and design excellence is backed up by its impressive performance. This Mustang is powered by a 4.6/640 HP V-8 engine, which is paired with a Whipple twin-screw supercharger and water-to-air intercooler. The cast aluminum intake manifold and Magnaflow stainless exhaust system add to the car’s power and sound.

The T56 6-speed transmission and Centerforce clutch ensure smooth, precise shifting, while the 3.55 limited slip differential and Maximum Motorsports coilover conversion provide excellent handling. The MacPherson strut front suspension and independent rear suspension give the SN65 a smooth, comfortable ride, while the Cobra 4-wheel disc brakes provide plenty of stopping power.

All of this performance has not gone unnoticed. In 2006, the SN65 won the Best of Show award at the World Ford Challenge, as well as the Crystal Year One award at the Year One Experience and the Ford Muscle Award at the Columbus Goodguys. It’s no wonder that this Mustang has been featured in Mustang and Fords and Hot Rod magazines.

The Reassembly Process

In 2015, the SN65 was disassembled for a new phase of modifications. The carbon fiber composite body panels were replaced with custom panels, and the Mustang was refinished in a sleek, menacing black. The Mustang’s original engineering and design excellence were preserved, but the car was given a fresh, updated look.
